Tim, I never thought of recording the shows, but I think it might be a waste of bandwidth to record them. Unless I’m doing something that I think someone would want to know, but alot of times I’m just plunking on the keyboard (piano) trying to figure out what to write. I’m working on my setup so that you can hear my piano as I noodle. that will make things a little more interesting rather than just watching the screen.

I like it very much indeed. It was interesting to note that you do the bass line first and the chords after. What do you base the chords on. Evidently they are not the original chords of Stella….Might be a stupid question but I am intrigued. Another problem is that when you are spaking I have full volume on to hear you and when you playback my ear jumps out of its socket.Anyway its wondeful stuff and Its even more pleasing to use Finale. I have finale allegro. Just mentioned that.

Ken, the next show will be much better. sorry about the rhythm section gaff. I’m working on having it just broadcast the screen and not use a webcam. I think I found some software to do that. There is always a slight learning curve to this stuff.

I enjoyed your first program and agree that the camera doesn’t show all that’s happening, but I sure it will improve. I also understand Not Understanding Finale, since I have struggled with every version for over 10 years. However; I would like to know which version you are using. Look forward seeing the next show. I stopped with Finale 2007 after purchasing every edition before. I think it has improved with nice shortcuts that make the arranging easier, especially with just playing a chord and having it exploded to all the other instruments with proper key changes and staff positions. It also includes the Garritan Jazz and Big Band system with great sound banks. It also now has a drum groove that helps with that part (I, too, have drum writing problem, but you can easily create drum parts with the horns. It automatically puts in the courtesy flats and sharps. Reuben.

Thanks Tim, I will try to post shows as frequently as I can without getting to repetitive. If I feel there is something to share I’ll do it. I kind of enjoy it. I was thinking of maybe doing some score analysis as well of some other writers too. That was something I used to do years ago, and don’t do it enough now. Its still way out of my scope as an amatuer and if I do venture to ask something (stupid) “bare” with me as I am beginning to see that I have a lot to learn. Anyway its just nice to follow what you are arranging andit sounds really good. I have the 2007 finale allegro and the instruments do not sound like yours in spite of having 2003.

Reuben, what I meant was that if a chord is an A7(b9) chord for example, I would change the Db to a C# because an A7 chord is spelled A C# E G, not with a Db. so I always make the chord read as the chord is spelled.

I watched the “more Stella” video - I really appreciated your remarks about small little things like the courtesy accidentals (which i use too) your problems with drum parts and the fact that the better the drummer the less you should write (when I’m lazy I often just give a drummer the lead trumpet part…or the bass part depending on which one has the most drum appropriate information) .

Also at the beginning I was curious about your Dbs on the A7+ chord but i saw the linear logic (D > Db > C) and i just assumed that you were another one of those “Bill Dobbins type of guys. But then (!) later, you corrected the Db to C#.

Maybe some people might get bored by this stuff, but there is nothing more passionate for me as i spend a good quarter of life doing the same thing (or ruining my eyes correcting the work of my writing students) - but not on Finale >>>i use Sibelius.

I was very impressed with the size of the chord symbols on your FINALE chart. One of my piano players has been complaining alot lately (and with good reason!) about my SIBELIUS chord symbols. the last concert he took all my charts and wrote the chords in himself, 2 or 3X bigger in felt pen because he couldn’t read the SIBELIUS chords ! CRISIS ! But the only way to make the chords bigger is to make the entire chart bigger - which could lead to 7 or 8 page charts ! What to do ??? Maybre i should change to FINALE?.

First of all, thank you Jim for these shows. I have only been able to watch two so far, but they are fun to watch. I hope you continue them (obviously if it’s not a pain for u).

Eric– I use Sibelius, and i was just wondering what the issue was with chord symbols. I also find the default setting to be too small, but they can be definitely be enlarged without enlarging the whole chart. Check manual (or check out their helpcenter online.)
