Cafe Cubano

In its recent latin jazz history, Los Angeles has produced a rich and wide variety of innovative and distinctive ensembles. For the most part, every latin jazz band in Los Angeles has something different to say. The Scott Martin Latin Jazz Band is an exciting new addition to this very colorful latin jazz panorama.

Scott Martin and his brothers, Andy and Stan, are highly respected musicians in Los Angeles. At one point, all three were briefly the brass section of the Poncho Sanchez Band. Scott was very pleased to include his brothers on his first session as a leader. "We've played together for ever, we know what the other will do. I grew up listening to them practice in the next room."

Scott is an 11 year veteran of the Poncho Sanchez Band, one of the most successful ensembles in latin jazz history. He continues to travel all over the world with Poncho, learning about the music's audience across several continents. Scott is also a member of the 18-piece "Jazz on the Latin Side All Stars" playing alongside such great musicians as Poncho, Francisco Aguabella, Justo Almario, Alex Acuña and Danilo Lozano.

Including Poncho's congas and experience was definitely a highlight for Scott, "Poncho's contribution was very much appreciated. He helped out a lot."

Needless to say, Poncho thinks very highly of Scott, "Scott is not only a great guy, but he's a very talented arranger, composer, and musician. He can play that old gritty style and he plays a great contemporary style. Scott `tiene corazón latino' when it comes to playing this music. He is so versatile that he can also play wonderful flute in the Cuban charanga style. This is a solid first outing for Scott and I really enjoyed helping him….. He's got the potential to be a fine band leader."

Scott's inspiration for his debut CD was drawn from the soulful and unforgettable spicy sounds of the Willie Bobo Band. Make no mistake, this tasty session does not attempt to recreate the Willie Bobo sound or to revisit Willie Bobo standards. The very latin funky "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries" is the only Bobo composition he could not leave out. Most of the material are Scott Martin original compositions.

His original compositions reflect some of his favorite things and places like "Café Cubano", "Platanos", "Escuela de Peska", and "San Juan" (Puerto Rico). On "Escuela de Peska" he remembers Herbie Hancock from "The Headhunters" years. "Rick White and I really wanted a Herbie vibe on that, because we're big fans of his." "Con Seis" reminds us of Wes Mongomery's soothing guitar magic laid over some smooth latin jazz.

"Café Cubano" is something latin jazz fans will enjoy, and it's a nice beginning for Scott Martin as a band leader.

Customer Review: I'm salivating for fried neckbones & home fries! Tasty stuff
Some very caliente (hot) latin jazz and salsa music with a funky groove from L.A. Mostly all original material from the Cafe Cubano's personnel too. Scott and the seven other musicians are first-rate! Their music gets my mouth salivating for some "fried neckbones and home fries." Tasty stuff! (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)
Customer Review: Great CD!!!
I bought this CD after hearing it on the radio on KUVO and it's GREAT!! Scott Martin plays great as well as his 2 brothers on the horns. How come these guys aren't more well known? They should put out more CDs!! And with Poncho Sanchez on there, it's really powerful! I've been recommending this CD to everyone I can. I love it!!

Customer Review: jazz fans--this is a CD for you!
I first heard Dan Faulk when he was playing for TanaReid [Akira Tana (drums), and Rufus Reid (bass). This was such an unusual group, its founders being the rhythm section... Well, I went not sure what I would hear, and I really loved this group: they had modern hip sound and were really swinging. And, liking this group, I heard Faulk, their saxophonist. What a incredible soloist! So I have been following his career, and I am so pleased to see his new CD! It is great! It's all originals.. before you groan, let me say he is a fabulous composer, and I think we will all be saying "I knew him when..." There are 3 songs I like especially. a) There's a blues called Crawfish which is an 11-beat blues. It has this loping gait to it, 5 beats, then 6.. You get what I mean? Anyhow it goes into regular 4/4 time in the solos...It is so swinging and such a deep take on the blues! b) He's also written a bossa nova! I knew Dan played with Steve Turre and some other Latin cats, but I didn't know he wrote in Latin style. This is a heartbreaking tune, really beautiful. It is called "You Thirty Years Ago" and it makes you wonder who he's talking about... c) Finally, one of my favorites is "Vote" which is this really COOOOOOL modern piece; it's kind of acid jazz but let me say, Faulk's thoroughly grounded in the REAL STUFF, I mean being able more than just playing on the changes; truly he's a deep soloist, he's got some mean bebop and post bop attitude in there. Anyhow, it goes up in this shrieking way: "VOTE!!!!!". You've just got to hear it to believe. I mean, I'm picking these 3 but THE WHOLE ALBUM is excellent. There's not a song on it that I don't like. That is super rare for a CD, jazz or otherwise. So if you like REAL jazz and you wanna hear something swinging, modern (as opposed to traditional jazz), and just altogether mind-blowing, this is it!

Customer Review: Amazing talahassee post-grunge indie rock
I don't know who the other reviewers are talking about but Nel Aspinal was Curt McNeil, Chad Larid and Tommy Hamilton. This follow-up to their debut (A Romans Map to Heaven) is an amazing and deeply textured album of classic indie/lo-fi rock tunes. Curt and Chad will move you with their nostalgic and beautiful harmonies and lyrics and Tommy is at the top of his game punctuating it all with great grooves and a great mix. Album highlights include the sweet and soulful Captiol Pink and the legubriau, moving Marianas Trench as well as the dark and moving Funeral Song (I+II)series. If you like melodic and nostalgic indie rock do yourself a favor and pick this up.
Customer Review: 1st Rate
Paul McKee is a superb player and arranger and this CD shows off both skills. He has a warm sound, smooth style and melodic, inventive solos. I've seen Paul live several times including with John Fedchock. This disk captures the sound and feel very well. I must say that I liked Paul's plaing better than John's. Another reason to buy this CD is the great Carl Fontana. Carl and Paul lay down some hot duets and since Carl hasn't been recorded nearly enough, anything he's on is worth buying. I don't get to hear Paul live often enough so this CD helps fill the gap. I recomend it without hesitation.

Customer Review: Outstanding, and nearly perfect!
I picked up this book to help me with my Jazz Studies classes. It is amazingly simple and clear, with just enough illustrations to make things easily understood, and a great dose of exercises for practical application. I found it clearly laid out and logically arranged. It's easy to find topics that I'm looking for just from the index, and there aren't pages of unnecessary information to go through before finding the needed resources. You will need a clear understanding of music theory, but not necessarily of specific jazz, since vocabulary specific to jazz writing is defined and clarified. The information is laid out as a reference, with information on each instrument, scale, chord, etc., carefully presented for quick reference.

I bought this book for a jazz arranging class. This book is pretty comprehensive and full of good info, ripe for beginners.
Customer Review: whoa! what happened to the price?! (part one)
Oh amazon! I was here about to buy this just yesterday at around $26 and left it for a few hours...came back and it jumped to $40!! Goodness, sounds like the house prices in Australia! You blink for a second and it shoots up instantly. Well I am definitely giving this 5 stars as I am familiar with the copy from another source...and dont want the authors to have a low star review just coz the price jumped- it isn't their fault. And so, I will give a proper review in part two, when amazon gets competive with the price again!

Inside the Score

This is not a text book, per se, but it is one of the most helpful resources available. Ray Wright has thoroughly analyzed eight classic charts from the pens of Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico and Bob Brookmeyer. The complete full score for each part is presented and the following elements are isolated and discussed: voicings, orchestration, textures, melodic construction, climaxes, chords, etc. The benefit of this book is that you can actually SEE real charts, and then listen to the CD to learn how the written notes translate into REAL music. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: From Another Guitarist
I teach classical guitar but know very little about jazz guitar. In my constant quest to become a better overall guitarist, I bought this book to help me learn more about jazz guitar. I must say that it is loaded with very useful information, and has about 48 great songs to play in jazz style. I greatly appreciate that all songs are written in music notation, so if you cannot read music then this book may not be of much help to you since there is NO TAB. But, there are chord diagrams above the notation so that should help somewhat. I have no serious complaints about this book at all. The reason I am only giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it desperately needs an accompanying CD. Although I am quite good at playing classical pieces, (mainly pieces which don't have a jazz rhythm), I am struggling to get the "feel" of the jazz beat. I don't come by it naturally and I really wish I could hear some of these songs played in a jazz style because I tend to revert back to straight rhythm. It has 2 pages of rhythmic practice which I can do very well, but something doesn't carry over well when I play the songs. It also has a lot of music theory information and guitar techniques (harmonics for example) which can only be good for a guitarist to understand. It has 188 pages of very useful information and several pages on alternative rhythms which I will check out in more detail. If you can read guitar notation, and already have even a little jazz experience, then you should have few problems, if any, with this book, though it is challenging. I've had no jazz experience other than the hell I went through in my improvisation class in music school. Also, and this has nothing to do with the book, but it took several weeks for my book to arrive.
Customer Review: from a guitarist
Concepts is a must have for anyone interested in finally peeking "behind the curtain" to learn about solo guitar. Classical guitarists, jazz guitarists, rock and country players can finally learn what everyone wants to know how to do. The arrangements of tunes in this book are excellent exercises to demonstrate concepts like walking bass, chord substitution, reharmonization, and more. But also, they are "ready to go" arrangements you can learn and use at your next performance. Play one and you'll instantly look up and go "oh, that's how they do it!" Other books I've used were full of data, but left me still wondering how to apply the information. This book puts it all together.

Customer Review: Great for beginners, too
I just changed my major from Classical Comp to Jazz Comp and I wanted to have a more solid idea of what I was getting into before the semester started, so I bought this book. Although, for some reason, the CD was not included in my copy - either because is fell our or it was stolen - this book has helped me out a lot. I have to play through each example, which I think makes learning the techniques more advantageous. The only down side is the format in which the text it written. It is very blocky and difficult to section out.
Customer Review: Hard to find, but really worth it!
I studied 2 years with Bill at Eastman in the 70's, and he talked a lot about Ellington's linear approach, how after you transcribed his big band arrangements, you found a lot of seemingly non-sensical vertical sonorities. This book is the fruit of his exhaustive endeavors, and offers a fresh, lucid approach to the understanding of 3-5 part harmonies functioning contrapuntally, as independent linear melody, not flying chord progressions at eighth-note speeds. This book will show you alternatives, and fresh approaches to your harmonic arranging vocabulary.

Customer Review: Howard is a great teacher
I studied with Howard Morgen 30+ years ago. He is one of the best teachers I've ever had (and I've had plenty). I recommend any book by him.
Customer Review: Great insight
Having been a subscriber to Fingerstyle guitar player magazine (for 5 years), Howard's articles were the most clear and complete. This book is a continuation of that style. If you want to learn about intervals, chord substitution and jazz reharmonization techniques. This is it.

Customer Review: The best "handbook" on jazz arranging.
Norman David's little text is the best of its type. He illustrates the essentials and quite a lot more in a concise and very, very helpful manner. Great work!
Customer Review: Big things come in small packages!
Jazz Arranging by Norman David is a superb little book, I'm amazed it doesn't appear in arranging book lists more often. I recently read 'Modern Jazz Voicings' by Ted Pease and Ken Pullig, and 'Arranging for Large Jazz Ensemble' by Ken Pullig and Dick Lowell, and as fabulous as those two books are, I'd say this book belongs up there at the top with them. The exercises give you immediate hands-on experience with scoring and transposition for various instruments, and it explains the various concepts and techniques in a clear and logical fashion. It starts with your usual description of each instrument, ranges, etc. Then, it covers writing for the rhythm section, two-part writing, 3/4/5-part writing, special voicings (fourths, USTs, clusters and spreads), and expanded methods (such as line-writing). It ends with two chapters on large ensemble writing and big-band writing. The exercises closing each chapter are very rewarding, and if you're feeling diligent, you can breeze through this book in no time. Of course, a prior knowledge of jazz harmony is recommended, which can easily be obtained from excellent books such as 'The Jazz Language' by Dan Haerle, 'Jazz Theory and Practice' by Lawn/Hellmer, or 'The Jazz Theory Book' by Mark Levine. If you know the basics, however, you should make this one of the first arranging books you purchase!

Customer Review: A Reference Book You Will Use Again and Again...
This is a great book for the aspiring writer. It contains detailed information on melodic and harmonic construction, chord nomenclature, and extensive sections on how to write idiomatically for rhythm section and horns. Methods of handling 2, 3, 4, and 5 part voicings are covered in great detail. Though not a book for the beginner, any student with a rudimentary knowledge of scales, keys, and basic chords will find numerous practical applications. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: disappointing
Seeking a useful text to share information with my teenager, this book did not win me over. I would not recommend it. I had issues with the completeness of information as provided in the lessons. Let me stress this is my opinion, you may see it differently but I would suggest you seek out a copy to review before making the purchase.

Changes over time: The evolution of jazz arranging

Jazz Arranging and Performance Practice: A Guide for Small Ensembles

Unlike most jazz arranging books, which focus on the rudiments of arranging (transposition, ranges, notation, and so forth), this book deals with the real substance of arranging for small jazz ensembles, in addition to the rudiments. Rinzler devotes a chapter to each of the following arranging elements: intros, endings, accents/breaks/dynamics, time and tempo changes, style changes, form, rhythm section procedure, harmony and orchestration. Over a hundred musical examples demonstrate arranging techniques that apply to 147 jazz standards and modern compositions.

Customer Review: Lots of ideas for the small jazz group
This is quite a remarkable book for its size and is quite unlike most of the other arranging books I've seen. For me it is by far the most useful book I have seen on the subject. (Another that looks quite promising is David Baker's Arranging and Composing for the Small Ensemble: Jazz, R & B, Jazz Rock, though I haven't read it). As the title suggests, this book is for arranging small ensembles, while the majority of books you find are more directed at arranging for the big band. I play in a small jazz group consisting of trumpet (me), trombone, guitar, double bass, drums. Most of the material you find in a typical arranging book is just not applicable to this situation. The first thing you will see when flicking through the pages of this book is masses of musical examples from actual recordings (and these are all referenced in the index). Even if you don't know the particular arrangement, just knowing the tune will help to imagine how it would sound with the particular device being described in the text. The book doesn't spend too much time on three and four part writing (since in a small group there is far less scope for this than in a big band). Instead Rinzler dedicates most space to discussing the form of the song. He covers various forms of intros, interludes, and outros, style changes (e.g. latin A section/swing B section), rhythmic accents, variations in instrumentation, changes in time signature, modulation, time feel, and so on. My only criticism of the book is that it is too brief in parts. I think some concepts could have deserved more text to help explain how to achieve a particular effect. Also the book is largely a compilation of the different tools the arranger has available. It would be nice to see a chapter on putting it all together. In fact there is a brief section where the author takes a lead sheet and then presents an arrangement of the piece, but it would have been nice to see a bit more the process involved rather than just seeing the end product. However, I guess this is where the imagination and skill of the arranger comes in and a lot of this is just experience at combining the various techniques. If you play in a small group and need some ideas, this is a great book. As far as I can tell, it appears to be one of the few arranging books available which specifically focus on small jazz ensembles.

Jazz Composition and Arranging

JAZZ COMPOSITION AND ARRANGING is a comprehensive introduction to the skills and techniques necessary for producing a successful composition and arranging project. Drawing on Boras' background as a professional composer and musician, his text focuses on the concepts underlying instrumental writing, rather than on stylistic concerns -- approaching the subject by integrating both narrative and music examples. These examples illustrate the harmonic and melodic practices that are prevalent in today's contemporary jazz music scene. In particular, the text focuses on presenting voice-leading tendencies in a number of different contexts: line writing, bass line construction, voicing procedures, and scoring textures. Equally appropriate for upper-level music majors and professional musicians, JAZZ COMPOSITION AND ARRANGING combines the basic elements of jazz so that both arrangers and composers gain a full understanding of the subject.

A Guide to Jazz Composition and Arranging

This book evolved from 40 years of teaching composition and arranging plus 50 years of professional writing. A comprehensive study, it covers preparatory activities, philosophical perspectives, listening lists, choice tune lists, all elements of composing melodies and chord progressions, arranging for small and large ensembles, enhanced use of rhythm sections, a sensitive approach to instrumental ranges, textural options, form, and the producing of lead sheets, scores, conductors guides, and part-copying. Though a self-contained study, the book has the unique feature of leading the reader to other excellent books on the subject.
