New Big Band by David Wilken

Almost Every Monday

Almost Every Monday was composed to celebrate the Monday night big band tradition. This Basie-style chart features bass (or any rhythm section player) and trumpet 2 on solos. The sax section gets to play an extended soli, followed by an understated tutti chorus ending with a climactic shout. The lead trumpet player will need to play a couple of E’s above high C and a written F# above high C for the final chord.

Combo Charts by Dave Cushman

AKH Puppy

Up swing, what could be better? The horns jumping in and out of unison take the lead as the rhythm section makes room. The bridge is reminiscent of a big band kicking along as the piano solos.
Horns play the melody again leading up to the Tenor Sax break, open solos. A short drum solo leading up to the horns and guitar playing the melody tutti. The rhythm section joins in leading up to the bridge. Out of the bridge into the “shout chorus.” The band kicks, the key changes and then the band kicks some more until the end.
Trumpet up to high E.

And Daisy Makes Five

And Daisy Makes Five is a pretty melody that is played individually by each of the horns and the guitar before the tune ends. As the melody stays the same, the groove underneath changes. Starting with the trombone playing over a mellow Bossa beat. The horns play give and go with the melody leading up to the bridge. The alto sax takes the lead on the bridge.

Next the guitar plays the melody in the background as the piano ad-libs. It gets funky as the Alto starts soloing. The next section features the trumpet with harmon playing the rubato melody with the guitar. Once again, it gets funky under the soprano sax solo before the band revs up for the ending.

Sax doubles on Alto and Soprano. Trumpet doubles on flugelhorn. Trumpet to high E

Chop Check

Chop Check started from the closing lick of the show when I played with the Temptations. The trombone player and I called the phrase “chop check” since it was at the end of the show and after a long vamp.

A high energy funk tune, ala Tower of Power, it starts out with a funky guitar intro leading into the horn melody. A half-time feel for the bridge before going back to the head. Tenor sax solos over a short rubato section before the sax sets the tempo back into the groove and sax solo. (Can be opened up). Guitar solos before the DS. Change of key and out, obviously ending with a chop check.
Trumpet to high F.
